A Sequel of Industry Expert Session: The Joint Provision of Audit & Non-audit Services

KOTA BHARU, 16 April 2025 - On Wednesday, a sequel of the industry expert session was conducted to capture the essence of participants’ experiences or perspectives on the joint provision of audit and non-audit services. Further research is being done to determine whether non-assurance services foster economic bonding, which would undermine auditor independence, or information spillover, which would increase auditor competency.

This research is conducted by interviewing the industry and academic experts of high credibility in the field. The more credible an expert is, the more their insights, advice, and opinions are likely to be trusted and valued by others within their field. In the first session, which was conducted on Friday, 24 March 2025, we invited industry experts Dr Nurmazilah Dato Mahzan, an audit committee of 2 Malaysian public listed companies, and academic expert Professor Dr Wan Nordin Wan Hussin, a scholar in accounting and corporate governance who currently serves Taylor’s University.

In the second session, we have invited Adjunct Professor Mohamad Faisal Abdul Malik. Currently he is the Managing Partner of FMC (Chartered Accountant, Malaysia). He is an immediate past vice president of the Malaysia Institute of Accountants (MIA). He has about 26 years of diverse experience in both financial and multinational commercial firms within Asia Pacific, such as Shell and UMWT, as well as the Sime Darby Group. He has spent many years helping leaders apply governance principles and generate value for the organisation.

Furthermore, Adjunct Professor Mohamad Faizal Abdul Malik have extensive exposure in the fields of management, sustainability and ESG. He is also a member of the Discipline Committee Panel of the Malaysian Bar, President of the Institute Syariah Audit Malaysia (ISAM), a member of ASEAN CPA, a member of the Association of Certified Business Consultants (CBC), a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA) and also a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia (ICDM). Other than serving the Faculty of Accountancy, UiTM, as an adjunct professor, he is an industry scholar and a subject matter expert to 3 public universities and 3 private universities.

The session was conducted for 1 and a half hours, filled with productive and constructive discussions. Striking preliminary findings have emerged which further strengthen our preliminary findings which were unveiled from the first expert session.
